Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is created by drawing a small amount of your own blood, processing it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, and then injecting the resulting concentrate directly into the injured tissue. Platelets contain the body's natural healing signals — when delivered at concentrated levels to areas that have stalled in normal healing, they can restart the repair process.
The procedure works particularly well for chronic tendon issues — Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, ligament sprains — where normal healing has incompletely resolved. By delivering high concentrations of growth factors directly to the affected tissue under ultrasound guidance, we stimulate the cellular processes that produce genuine tissue remodeling rather than just temporary inflammation control.

Regenerative medicine is most appropriate for patients with chronic tendon, ligament, or fascia injuries that have persisted despite conservative care. The classic candidate has had Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, or a high-grade sprain for six months or more without adequate resolution from physical therapy, orthotics, and standard treatments.
For active patients — particularly Boulder runners and Front Range athletes — PRP offers an option for stalled injuries that aren't responding to standard care. Many patients see meaningful improvement within weeks of treatment, allowing return to activity that had been blocked for months.

Regenerative therapies also have applications in wound healing, particularly for chronic non-healing wounds in patients without adequate response to standard wound care. Growth factor concentrate accelerates the cellular processes needed for wound closure.
The treatment isn't appropriate for every condition. Acute injuries usually heal well with standard care and don't need regenerative intervention. Clinical evidence supports PRP effectiveness for several chronic foot and ankle conditions, particularly Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, and certain ligament injuries. Success rates vary by condition and individual factors but typically range from 60 to 80 percent meaningful improvement in chronic conditions that haven't responded to standard care.
PRP works best when applied to specific conditions where chronic injury has stalled in normal healing. Acute injuries usually heal well with standard care and don't need regenerative intervention. Severely advanced conditions (significant arthritis, complete tendon ruptures) often need other interventions. We're honest about expected outcomes for your specific situation — PRP isn't a miracle treatment, but for the right patients with the right conditions, it can produce dramatic improvement.

Initial improvement often appears within 4 to 6 weeks of PRP treatment, with continued progress over 3 to 6 months. The treatment stimulates a real biological healing process, so results build gradually rather than appearing immediately. Some conditions benefit from a series of injections spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for optimal response.
Patients sometimes expect immediate relief and are disappointed when the first weeks don't show dramatic change. The biology is straightforward — tissue remodeling takes time. Patients who follow the recommended protocol (avoiding anti-inflammatory medications during the early healing phase, modifying activity appropriately, completing any recommended physical therapy) typically see better outcomes than those who don't. We track response at follow-up visits and adjust the plan as needed.

PRP injections involve some discomfort during and shortly after the procedure. Local anesthesia minimizes injection pain. Mild to moderate soreness for 24 to 48 hours after is normal and reflects the inflammatory response that initiates healing. Pain typically resolves within a few days, replaced by gradual improvement of the original injury.
We don't recommend anti-inflammatory medications during the first week after PRP because they can blunt the healing response. Tylenol is appropriate for pain management. Ice can help with discomfort. The post-procedure soreness is generally well-tolerated by patients motivated to address chronic problems. Most patients describe the discomfort as significantly less than the chronic pain that brought them in for treatment.

Yes — PRP has an excellent safety profile because it uses your own blood and growth factors. There's no risk of immune reaction, disease transmission, or systemic effects. Local risks (infection, bleeding, temporary increased pain) are uncommon and similar to those of any injection. Sterile technique and ultrasound guidance further reduce these risks.
Specific contraindications include active infection in the treatment area, certain blood disorders, active cancer in the treatment area, and a few other specific situations. We screen for contraindications before treatment. The vast majority of patients are excellent candidates with no safety concerns. Our team monitors response throughout the treatment course and addresses any unusual issues immediately.

Most insurance plans don't cover PRP for musculoskeletal conditions, considering it elective. Self-pay costs typically range from $500 to $1,500 per injection depending on the area treated and number of injections. HSA and FSA accounts can usually be used for PRP treatment. Some workers' compensation cases include coverage.
We discuss costs upfront before recommending PRP so you can make an informed decision. For patients where PRP is clearly the right next step but cost is a concern, we also discuss alternatives — radial shockwave therapy, MLS laser therapy, and continued conservative care all have their place.
